Emma Louisa Smith was born near Dillsboro, Oct. 22, 1846, and died March 25, 1895, at the age of 46 years.

She was married to James H. Abbott Dec. 24, 1866, and to them were born four children, one daughter and three sons, al now living.

At the early age of 14 she united with the Presbyterian church of Dillsboro, during the ministry of Rev. J.M. McRee, and for years as God gave her strength was active and faithful in all Christian duties.

Mrs. Abbott was an earnest worker in the Ladies' Aid societyof the church until failing health compelled her to give up active service, but her heart was still in the work.

She was also a member of Esther lodge, D. of R., from its organization in 1871.

In health she loved her Savior and three years of suffering only brought her nearer to him. She was an example of Christian patience, never complaining and always thinking of helping others. Though anxious to live for her family she rejoiced in the hope of soon meeting her Savior.

She selected a hymn and text for the funeral and requested her relatives to prepare her lifeless remains fro the tomb.

Among her last words were, "I am going home and it will be such a sweet rest;" and again, "I shall soon be taking a sweet, cool drink from the pure, sweet river of the water of life."

All that loving hands and tender care could do was done to avert her rapid decline, but calmly and without a struggle she passed from this life of pain and joy ever committed to the bright home where sorrow and death never come, and where in peace and rest God's redeemed ones are ever with the Lord.

Funeral services at the Presbyterian church were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C.T. White.
