James William Abbott, born in Halifax County, VA, December 1, 1932, expired September 9, 1977 at the Veteran Hospital, Durham, NC. He was the son of James Harvey Abbott and the late Frances Coleman Abbott. He received his formal education in the public schools of Halifax County. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Crystal Hill Baptist Church. He lived a consistent Christian life and was a faithful member until death. He was a member of the board of trustees and of choir #2. He served his country in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean War. On June 23, 1956, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Clara Taylor. To this union four children were born — two sons and two daughters - 3 of whom survive. He was endowed with a pleasing personality, a heart of love, radiating peace, and good will toward mankind. As a husband, and father, he was unexcelled. He labored and looked well to his household making it a center of Christian light and love. Those left to cherish his memory include: his loving wife; one son, James A.; two daughters, Felicia C. and Sonya D; his father, James H.; two great aunts, Mrs. Adeline Dennis and Mrs. Alis Powell; one great uncle, Sampson Hawkins; mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taylor; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law and an entire constituency of other relatives and friends.
