Mr. Abbott was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Worland, the son of LeRoy J. and Lela Mae (Herd) Abbott Sr. He was raised in Worland and attended schools in Worland, where he graduated from high school in 1955. He then attended Regis University in Denver for two years before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served in Canada on the "DEW Line" at a radar installation.
He returned to Denver and married V. Marlene Schmalz, on June 3, 1961, at St. Michael's Church in Delta, Colo.
He worked for Mountain Savings and Loan in Boulder. He transferred to Longmont, Colo., in 1969, and six years later the family moved to Rock Springs where he joined Capital Saving & Loan. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Cheyenne where he was the bank manager of Security First Savings and Loan for 12 years. While living in Cheyenne, he served on the Frontier Days Parade Committee and on the USAF Military Affairs Advisory Board.
Mr. Abbott then moved back to Rock Springs to work for Sweetwater County as the deputy county assessor for 13 years, retiring in 2003. In 2005 he moved to Worland and retired.
He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He was a life long member of the Catholic Church and had been a member of Knights of Columbus and served on the Catholic School Board in Rock Springs. He also was a member of the B.P.O. Elks and Rotary International.
Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Worland; by his sons, Dave Abbott and Dan Abbott both, of Fort Collins, Dean Abbott of Albuquerque, N.M., and Don Abbott of Worland; his sister Lana Hammons of Tracy, Calif.; his brother, Bill Abbott of Rifle, Colo.; and by his 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Rosary and Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary Magdalen Church with the Rev. Jim Heiser officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Worland.
Friends may contribute to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Building Fund at P. O. Box 901, Worland, WY, 82401, or to the charity of the donor's choice. Veile Mortuary of Worland is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
