She was born April 27, 1924, in Liege, Belgium, the daughter of Henry and Madeleine (Aerts) Thyssens. As a young woman, Georgette's life took a traumatic turn when she was taken captive by the Germans during World War II. While in the prisoner camp she became very ill and was eventually set free due to her health. She spent many months recovering from this experience.
Georgette met Thomas Zaharko, who was serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the war. They were married in November 1945 in Belgium.
They began their married life in Saltese. Georgette worked in various jobs as a bookkeeper, though she spent most of her time at home exploring her creative side. She was a tremendous artist and gifted knitter. Many of her creations have been passed down to her family through the years.
Georgette also enjoyed feeding animals, going on picnics and shopping and was a talented gourmet cook. Many will remember that she loved a good cup of coffee - very black and very strong!
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom and her parents.
Georgette is survived by her sister Jane Wood of St. Regis; two nieces, Madeleine “Mimi" Waibel and Rosie Schreckendgust (and husband Jim), all of St. Regis; three nephews, Kenneth B. Wood (and wife Teri) of Bismarck, N.D., Larry Wood (and wife Dorothy) of San Antonio, Texas, and Bruce Wood of Superior; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
A rosary service will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at St. Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Superior.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bunch-Toews Funeral Chapel of Plains.
