Melinda Elizabeth Allen, 93, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater.

She was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Sublette, to Jonathan Orlando and Hetta Rebecca Thornburg Alexander. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1935, attended Dodge City Community College for two years and Anderson University in Anderson, Ind., for one year.

She married Leroy L. Allen on Dec. 26, 1944, at the home of her parents in Satanta. He died Sept. 16, 1991. She also was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Allen was a member of First Church of God in Dodge City. She served as church librarian, was secretary of the Sunday School for many years, was a member of the church council and served as president of Women of Church of God for 12 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Clarena Faye Johnson of Auburn, Ind., and Nita Wiley of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; two sons, Norman Allen of Wichita, and Gary Allen of Ladoga, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
