Harold Hoyt Abee, 83, of Shannondale of Maryville, formerly of Oak Ridge, entered the glorious presence of his heavenly Father on Oct. 31, 2005, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 14, 1921, to Roscoe and Celeste Abee in Hickory, N.C., Mr. Abee graduated from Lenior Rhyne College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1943, and a master's in Industrial Management from UT in 1962. From 1943 to 1945, he served as a Naval Aviation Cadet and Pilot and served as a PBY instructor in Pensacola, Fla. In 1946, Mr. Abee began his career as a health physicist at ORNL. He also acted as a monitoring director for the Pacific Weapons Test Series of the thermonuclear bomb at the Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1952.
As charter member of the Health Physics Society, in 1964 Mr. Abee presented the by-laws at the first meeting of the International Health Physics Society in Paris, France. He received the Elda E. Anderson Award for invaluable contribution to the establishment of the International Radiation Protection Association in 1967. In 1972, Mr. Abee was appointed to a staff position in the Office of Health, Safety, and Environmental Affairs at Y-12, retiring in 1984 after 39 years with Union Carbide.
A charter member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, Mr. Abee was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in his later years. During retirement he pursued his passion for golf and with his wife traveled around the world with the Friendship Force of Knoxville. Along with a deep commitment and involvement with Emmaus Walk, he also participated with great joy in many Christian conferences.
Mr. Abee is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Berenice; three daughters: Paulette and husband, Roy Aaron, of Knoxville ; Donna Abee of Boonville, Calif.; Phyllis and husband, John Dibert, of Peachtree City, Ga.; and son James Abee and wife, Lili of Berkeley Calif.; five grandchildren, Tim Bogardus, Justin Aaron and wife Jacqueline, Jonathan Aaron, Elizabeth Aaron, Ben Dibert and wife Amy, and Matt Dibert; and three great-grandchildren, George Aaron, Jaden Aaron, and Elizabeth Jane Dibert.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, in the chapel of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vernon Holstad and the Rev. Dixie Petrey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Family and friends will meet at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for a 3:30 p.m. interment service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Holston Home for Children, P.O. Box 188, Greenville, TN 37744-9982, or Kingswood School, Inc., P.O. Box 5000, Bean Station, TN 37708.
