Ramona Abbott

Ramona Jean Abbott, 78, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 16, 1929 in Alton to Harry M. and Genevieve (Lyles) Hilyard. She married Alonzo "Jack" Abbott on Jan. 17, 1977, in Godfrey. He survives.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Linda (Gansz) Douglas of Jerseyville and Beverly (Gansz) Simpson of Bunker Hill; four stepchildren and their spouses, Sandra and Aaron Hayes of Kane, Jeffrey and Carol Abbott of Jerseyville, Steven Abbott of Kane and Bruce and Jamie Abbott of Jerseyville; five grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bonnie Rhodes of Williamsville, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Genevieve and Louis Pontero; her father; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Gettings; and two sisters, Patsy Land and Connie Watson.

Raised in Bunker Hill, she attended school there for several years before graduating from Pearl High School in 1947. She began working in the composing/layout room for Cordes Printing in St. Louis and later worked for the Suburban Journal in Alton and Phillips Garage in Jerseyville.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Wilbur Cain officiated. Burial followed at Bunker Hill City Cemetery. Memorials my be given to the Berean Baptist Church in Bunker Hill.
