CPL US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II


James Lowell Abbott was born in Hood River, Oregon to Rufus Augustus Abbott and Edwina Marie Pearl (Burres) Abbott on May 25, 1923. The family has moved to Portland where father Rufus is working as a packer for fruit and vegetable warehouse. Those had to be hard times during the depression. The family moves back to Hood River where Jim and brother Joel attend the Barrett School. Mother and father separate about 1933, Mother remarries Glenn Blevins and moves back to Portland. Rufus never remarries and raises the boys there in Hood River where he works on Road Construction. He served in the Marines during World War II. From Dec 16, 1941 until four years later as a corporal he is discharged on December 15, 1945. Father, Rufus, is now living in Redmond, Oregon. Jim met Leone Emmerson, they were married on June 25, 1950, and settled down and raised their four children all in Redmond, Oregon. He went to work at the warehouse for Central Electric Coop and was very active in the American Legion, also affiliated with the Eagles, 3rd Marine Division Association, the VFW and the American Vets of Baker, Oregon. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. His wife Leone passed away from cancer on June 13, 1993 almost 43 years of marriage. Jim passed away on November 26, 2002 at the age of 79. He leaves behind three daughters, Kathi Kanahele of Bend, Cheryl Clark and Karen Yelle, both of Hillsboro; son, Joel of Pendleton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a grandchild. Interment is in the Redmond Memorial Cemetery.
