Obituary from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner:

Mason Dale Abbott, 64, of Kenai, passed away on June 26, 2009, in Kenai. Most knew him as Dale, but his family knew him as "Pop." He was born in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 15, 1944, to Dudley "Jack" Abbott and Mildred "Lou" Abbott. Dale came to Alaska with his family in 1955, and they lived in Whittier, where his father was a lumber grader with Morrison-Knudsen Co. Dale started commercial set net fishing at the age of 15 with his brother at Otter Creek. Dale was a major factor in the road leading to the beach at Captain Cook State Park. In his 30s, he owned fishing sites at Moose Point, which he fished from for many years. He was at home on the sea. Working on fishing boats and tugboats seemed to be his passion. He worked on the trans-Alaska pipeline and was a skipper during the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

He married Judith Shoemaker in 1960 and they bore three children: Karen, Kathy and Tyna, two of whom died at an early age.

In 1969, he was drafted into the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1971 because of a back injury.

He married Wanda Albertson in 1979, and they bore two children: Michael and Marquella. After they divorced, Dale raised the children as a single parent in Homer, coaching baseball and involving them in sports. When he and Wanda re-married in 1995, he adopted Wanda's eldest son, Heath D. Willis, loving him as his own. He was a good father, brother, son, grandfather and friend, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his mother, Lou Abbott of Soldotna; sisters Sheila Patterson of Anchorage and Sherrie Abbott of Anchor Point; daughter Tyna Louise and husband Eddie Currie of Las Vegas, Nev.; sons Michael Dale Abbott of Soldotna, Heath D. Willis and his wife, LaSean of Fairbanks; daughter Marquella Dawn and husband Robert Grote of Soldotna; grandchildren Grayson Alexander, Mason Thomas Willis and Pheobe Mae Grote; niece Ginger and husband Robert Slaughter of Anchorage, Lorena and husband of Palmer; nephew James Lee Nielsen and his wife, Misti, and grandniece Cheyenne Elizbeth of Washington state. He was preceded in death by his brother Dudley Lee Abbott and stepfather Lucky Kirk, both of Soldotna.

Dale was loved and cherished, even if he didn't know it. He was stubborn and grouchy at times, but when it counted he was always there. He was the best father he could be; he loved each and every one of us the best he knew how. There didn't seem to be much to him on the outside, but we never knew what was going on in that head of his. He was a strange breed, that Dale Abbott. He did everything in his power to make sure his son Michael and daughter Marquella had everything they needed when they were growing up. He was a good man, he had the heart of a lion, and it was made of gold. He will be missed by all who knew him and some that didn't. He will forever be looking over us, making sure we are doing well. We love you, Pops!
