The photo shows Wayne, his uncle Downey Dawson (his mother's younger brother) and his brother Darrell. When he was 24, Wayne entered Navy in 1961.  He was to be drafted into the Army, but the induction was postponed.  Wayne talked to the various services to see what opportunities each offered.  The Navy's offer appealed to him most.  It offered a year of schooling in electronics, with another three years of general service.  Although Wayne entered the Navy with a contract to do electrical engineering work, his aptitude led him to become a Communications Technician.   Associated with this position, he was required to obtain a diplomatic passport.  He was attached to a number of embassies during his service.  Boot camp was in San Diego, and he went through the Monterey Naval War College. (from a 1992 conversation in with his cousin, Pat Thorson Conwell)
