Services for Orlo LeRoy (Lee) Jones, 85, Topeka, Illinois, formerly of Red Oak, are today at 2 p.m. at Harley Funeral Home in Havana, Illinois. Burial is in Pekin, Illinois. Mr. Jones, died Saturday, February 15, 1992 in Havana.
Orlo Lee Jones was born March 28, 1906, in Coburg, Illinois, to John Martin and Alta Mammie (Van Kirk) Jones. He attended country school in Coburg. While in southwest Iowa, he worked on a farm, played music on KICK Radio in Red Oak and Henry Field's radio station in Shenandoah and played for many dances with his brothers. Lee married Grace Pauline Murray May 25, 1932, in Nebraska City, Nebraska. His mother, Alta and Chet went down with them. It was said that he was forced to marry her. He went down, got married, but when he got back he never got out of the car and never stayed with her after that. They had one child Elaine.
Following his second marriage was to Minnie Chase on January 31,1934, in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple moved to Peoria, Illinois, where he worked for Quaker Oats. After retiring, he formed a band and played piano in Havana and also on excursion boats on the Illinois River.
He died February 15, 1992 at the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 15 days. Services were held Tuesday, February 18, 1992, at 2:00 P.M., at the Hurley Funeral Home. Burial is at the Glendale Memorial Gardens. Services were conducted by Rev. Timothy Holcomb-Densmore. Paul bearers were Bill Dickerson, Tony Alexander, Gene Bohm, John Ebert, Bill Short, and Merle Beckett.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Donald Jones of Havana; one daughter, Elaine Pierce of Nebraska; two stepsons; five brothers, Kenny Jones, Chester Jones, Junior Jones and Wally Jones, all of Red Oak, and Delmont Jones of Buffalo, Missouri; two sisters, Bonnie Abbott of Stanton and Naomi Spittler of Tunas, Missouri; nieces and nephews.
