D. Eldon Abbott, 86, a retired area businessman, died Monday at Gritman Memorial Medical Center following a heart attack.
He was born April 29, 1908 to Roy E. and Mary Alice (Nelson) Abbott at Dallas, Iowa. When he was 11, the family moved to Palouse, and in 1920 to Viola. He graduated from Moscow High School.
He married Lily Chaney on Aug. 28, 1926, at Moscow. They made their home at Viola, and he worked for Potlatch Forests Inc. (now Potlatch Corp.) They owned and operated several businesses throughout the years, including a general store and post office at Viola, a creamy, a tire shop and the Campus Motel in Moscow.
He later went to work in the janitorial department at the university of Idaho, retiring from there in 1974.
He was an active member of the United Church of Moscow, and served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and treasurer of the the church. He was a 50-year member and past master of Potlatch Lodge No. 66, A.F. & A.M., and served as district deputy for the lodge. He was a member and past worthy matron of the Easter Star, a 32nd degree mason, a member of the Shrine as well as a member of the Elks and Moose lodges.
Survivors include his wife at the family home in Moscow; a son in Viola; three daughters, one in Colfax, one in Moscow, and one Anchorage; a brother in Clarkston; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.[Survivor names omitted per Find a Grave policy.]
He was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson.
Funeral services will held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Short's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mike Burr of the United Church of Moscow and Pastor Jim Dyson of Richland, Wash., officiating. Burial will follow at the Viola Cemetery.
Viewing will be at Short's from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The family suggests memorials be made to the United Church or to the Moscow Ambulance Fund.
