Gerrit Abbink, 97, Pipestone, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Ashton Care Center, Pipestone.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 24 from 5-8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Chapel, Edgerton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Chapel, Edgerton.
Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Edgerton.

Gerrit Abbink was born to Garret and Ella (Kallemeyn) Abbink on July 21, 1911 in Sheldon, Iowa. When he was two-years-old he moved with his parents to Worthington where he attended school through the eighth grade. At the age of 12, he had a ruptured appendix that nearly took his life. In 1928, the family moved to the Edgerton are where they lived on different farms until they settled at the farm 5 ½ miles south of town.

He married Fannie Ella Prink on Oct. 13, 1942. Following their marriage they farmed with Gerrit's parents on the same farm until 1956 when they started farming on their own. After Gerrit retired, he worked for Kallemeyn Insulation in Edgerton for six years. The couple enjoyed 14 years of traveling in their Ford van visiting nearly ever state in the U.S.

His wife preceded him in death in 1998. Following a stroke in 2001, he became a resident of Ashton Care.

Gerrit was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton where he had served as a deacon during the early 1960s.

He is survived by his son, Ronald (Gail) Abbink, Watertown, S.D.; his son-in-law, Lee Schroeder, Beaver Creek; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his daughter, Rose; and his sister, Jennie Koster.
