Alvin "Al" Laun, age 83 of Arlington, SD died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Prairie Lakes Health Care Center in Watertown, SD.
Funeral services for Mr.Laun will be 10:30 am Friday, May 14, 2010 at St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Shane Stevens officiating, burial will be in the Arlington City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at St. John's Catholic Church and preceding services on Friday. The Johnson-Henry Funeral Home of Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
Alvin George Laun was born at Colton, SD on May 1, 1927 to Ervin and Emma (Aker) Laun. He joined 3 sisters, Helen, Ada and Berdene.
He attended school in both Dell Rapids and Vienna. In 1944, at age 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and served 3 1/2 years. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base in Detroit until being sent to the island of Samar in the Philippines, becoming a WWII Veteran upon his discharge.
On March 10, 1949, he married Lois Bauman in Bryant, SD. Al and Lois were blessed with four children: Cheryl, Dana, Carla and Donald.
After living a short time in Luverne, MN, Chamberlain and Rapid City, SD, Al's family settled down at Arlington, SD where he owned and operated Al's Body Shop from the late 1950's to 1981, when he retired.
Al was a member of Arlington Volunteer Fire Department over 20 years, the American Legion Post 42 for over 60 years, and the Isaac Walton League. He also served on the city council for 5 years.
Al was know for his sense of humor and enjoyed lighthearted pranks. He also enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his wife, family and friends.
His favorite vacations and hunting trips were at the cabin by Deerfield Lake in the Black Hills, and fishing the Missouri River.
Family and friends were the mainstay of Al's life. He greatly enjoyed the times he spent with them. He was very proud of all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Al is survived by children: Cheryl (Darrel) Gullickson, Milbank, SD, Dana Laun, Deadwood, SD, Carla Laun, Watertown, SD and Donald Laun and fiancée Amiee Ford, Rapid City, SD, Naomi (Terry) Strohfus, Hazel, SD; a sister, Ada Achen; grandchildren, Angie and Tony Zempel, Wilmot,SD, Cindy (Darnell )Witte, Frederick, SD, Michelle (Chris) Rice, Savannah, GA, Kathy Laun and fiancée Scott Smith, Brookings, SD, Gretchen (Kyle) Weber, Twin Brooks, SD, Victoria (Jeremy) Hennen, Hazel, SD, LaShawna (Jeremy) Johnson, Lewistown, MT, Brandon Strohfus, Hazel, SD, Matthew Laun, Ankeny, IA, Micheal Parks, Watertown, SD and Jacob Laun, Ankeny,IA and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and extentended family.

Al is preceded in death by Lois, his loving wife of 51 years, his parents, and 2 sisters, Helen and Berdene.
