Julian C. Quissell, 94, Jasper, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Pipestone County Medical Center, Pipestone.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 31 from 10-11 a.m. at Hartquist Funeral Home – Foster Chapel in Jasper.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31 at 2 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in rural Trent, S.D.

Honorary casket bearers will be Donald Hellem, Gordon Holt, Kenneth Shefte, and Kenneth Hellie.
Casket bearers will be Steven and Peter Hatlestad, Christopher Seiffert, Myron, Dennis and Bobby Quissell.

Interment will be in Bethania Lutheran Cemetery.

Julian Clifford Quissell was born to John and Ingeborg (Shefte) Quissell on February 7, 1914 on the family farm in rural Moody County, S.D., where he was raised and attended the Quissell Country School. He graduated from Jasper High School in Jasper in 1932 and helped his father with the family farm.

He married Lucile Hermanson on June 1, 1939 in the Norway Lutheran Church near Garretson, S.D. Following their marriage they famed in Alliance Township, northwest of Jasper for 39 years, until 1979 when they moved to Jasper.

In 2003, several years after his wife died, he moved to Jasper Sunrise Village and then for the past seven months, he has been a resident of the Ashton Care Center in Pipestone.

He was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in rural Trent, where he served on numerous committees and held offices. He also served for many years as a school board member of the Thompson Country School in rural Trent, as well as the Jasper Public School District in Minnesota.

He is survived by his five children, Barbara (Stephen) Seiffert, Albuquerque, N.M.; Gerald (Barbara) Quissell, Bend, Ore.; David (Barbara) Quissell, Castle Rock, Colo.; Joanne (Gary) Peterson, Marengo, Iowa and Carol (Steven) Nelson, Eau Claire, Wisc.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Avis (Quissell) Aanestad, Casper, Wyo., and Madeline (Quissell) (Paul) Hatlestad, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (Hermanson) Randgaard and Bernice (Johnson, Hermanson) Crawford.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile (Hermanson) Quissell; his daughter, Janet Quissell; one brother, Curtis Quissell and one sister, Berniece Lerdahl.

Memorial donations can be made to Sanford Children's Health Research Center at Sanford Children's Hospital, 1600 W. 22nd St., Sioux Falls, S.D. 57117-5039 or to a charity of your choice in Julian's memory.
