Drucilla Aitken

Former Madras resident, Drucilla "Dru" Mae Aitken, age 76, died peacefully on June 21, 2010, with her family at her side, in her Cupertino, Calif., home after battling breast cancer for over 2 1/2 years.

She was born on April 1, 1934, in Edgemont, S.D., to Hubert and Anna (Cork) Bartlett. She spent much of her life in Central Oregon.

After graduating from Bend High, she attended Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and earned a degree as a X-ray technician. She fulfilled a lifelong goal of receiving a four-year degree by obtaining a Bachelor's of Arts degree in 1996 from Oregon State University.

She met her husband, Donald Aitken, at Lundgren Lumber Co. in Bend, and they married in 1957. In 1966, they opened Madras Builders Center, providing building materials and friendly advice for 40 years within the Madras community. Mrs. Aitken was also employed as an X-ray technician at Mountain View Hospital for over 20 years.

She was a longtime attendee/member of the United Methodist Church (in Bend, Oregon, Madras, Oregon and Cupertino, Calif.). She volunteered within the community in many ways including the Madras SMART reading program and as a board member of the Jefferson County Arts Association.

Mrs. Aitken was an active violin player in the Central Oregon Symphony and a highlight of her life was attending various musical performances and plays throughout Oregon.

She also enjoyed traveling to various places throughout the world, including Norway, England, Greece, Egypt, Mexico, China, France, Australia, New Zealand, and many places within the USA.

She moved to Cupertino, Calif., to be near her family in May 2009. She enjoyed staying informed with current events, working in the garden and being with nature. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir and attending bible study.

Survivors include her sister, Emmajean Huguenin of Florida; son, Kevin Aitken; daughter-in-law, Judy Hart; grandson, Brandon Hart Aitken; Norweigan exchange daughter, Tove Tvedt Skarstein; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Donald Aitken, and her sister, Adelva Dietz.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery in Madras, at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 5. All are welcome to a reception that will immediately follow the service at Madras United Methodist Church, 49 NE 12th Street.

Memorial donations have been suggested to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure (for the research and education of breast cancer), or to the charity of one's choice.
