Polio Claims First VIctim In County: Ten Year Old Boy

Child Reported Not To Have Salk Shots

Rites for 10-year old James Dioran White, first polio victim of the year in Lawrence County, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Owens Chapel Baptist Church.

The child died at 10 a.m. Friday at University Hospital in Birmingham. He was carried to Birmingham Wednesday night from Lawrence County Hospital, where he had been admitted that afternoon.

The child had not received a Salk polio shot, it was reported, and was paralyzed in all parts of his body below the neck.

Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas White, Moulton 1; one brother, J. T. White, Moulton 1; two sisters, Ella Jean White and Betty Olena White, Moulton1; six half-brothers, Lee Rubin, Byron, and Baryn White, Junior Culver, all of Moulton 1; and Howard Gillatine, Chicago; four half-sisters, Mrs. Sally Lovett, Moulton, Mrs. Maddie Mars, Moulton 1; Mrs. Elsie Steele, Mt. Hope 1, and Mrs. Welsie Jenkins, Landersville.

Rev. James Hood conducted the rites, and burial was made in the adjoining cemetery, Elliott directing.

Pallbearers were Homer Hand, J. C. Steele, Sim Jenkins, Cranford White, Cleveland Lovett, Arnold White.
