James D. Abbott, 92, pioneer resident of Murphy and one of the oldest merchants in the extreme western section of the State, died early Friday morning, after an illness of several months. Mr. Abbott was born in Marcellus County, New York, June 27, 1832 and came to the South shortly before the War Between the States. For seven years he served as Postmaster in a Tennessee town, leaving tat[sic] state to make his home in Murphy 57 years ago. He founded a mercantile business fhom[sic] which he retired some time ago. He was regarded as one of the most influential citizens of Murphy and was active in both civic and religious circles. It was through his efforts that a Presbyterian Church was established in his adopted town. For over 80 years he was a member of this branch of the Christian faith. His wife died about 20 years ago and he was also preceded to the grave by five of his nine children. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. R. H. Hyatt, Mrs. J. M. Vaughn and Mrs. G. W. Candler and one son, George Edward Abbott, all of Murphy. Funeral services was[sic] held Saturday afternoon.
