Two killed in plane crash near Donnybrook

A 10-year-old Donnybrook girl and her 32-year-old uncle, died in the crash of a single engine airplane near Donnybrook Saturday evening.

Amy Lee Lawson, daughter of the Terry Lawsons, was a passenger in the plane being flown by Michael B. Yates of Moreno Valley, CA, when the 1973 2-seat Cessna crashed four miles north of Donnybrook, shortly after 8 p.m.

Yates had rented the plane from Pietsch Flying Service of Minot and was giving family members rides. The plane crashed just after takeoff. Authorities said it made a left turn and went into a big, deep ravine and nosed into the ground. Family members were harvesting nearby and saw the plane go down.

Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration were on the scene Sunday to investigate the crash.

A double funeral is being held today (Wednesday) at 10:00 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church of Minot for Amy Lee Lawson, age 10, of Donnybrook, and her uncle, Michael Blame Yates, age 32, 23430 Dracaea Ave., Moreno, CA.Burial will be at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Amy Lee was born Feb. 7, 1980, in Minot, a daughter of Susan and Terry Lawson. She had lived at Minot and Donnybrook and would have entered the fifth grade at the Donnybrook School this fall. She was active in gymnastics and basketball, and played the clarinet in the school band.

Surviving are her parents; sisters, Kristi and Katie, both at home; maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Marjorie and Charles Graetz, Minot; paternal grandmother, Ione Lawson, Minot; paternal great-grandmother, Marie Nelson, Minot.

Michael Blaine Yates was born August 10, 1957, in Tampa, FL, a son of Gerald and Pat Yates. He was raised in Tampa and in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He graduated from Northwest High School in Roanoke Rapids, and in 1977, entered the U.S. Air Force. He served in the 906th Air Refueling Squadron at Minot Air Force Base until 1985, when he was transferred to the 6th Air Refueling Squadion at March Air Force Base in Riverside, CA. He was a technical sergeant in the Air Force at the time of his death.

He was a member of the US. Parachute Association, the
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and was a participating member of the Armed Forces West Skydiving Team.

He married Lee Ann Moses July 15, 1983, in Minot.

She survives, along with a son, Shawn Michael, at home; his mother and step-father, Pat and Tommie Hudson, Roanoke Rapids; brothers, Rodney, Rocky Mount, NC, Dale, Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Pamela Parker and Teresa Hudson, both Roanoke Rapids; maternal grandfather, Clyde Wages, Gaston, NC; paternal grandparents, Richard and Dorothy Yates, Dade City, FL.
