William K. Abbitt applied for a Civil War pension in 1905 and was turned down because as stated "Applicant has no special disability heretofor claim not allowed". He applied again under claim #20633 and was granded a Class 2 pension. As part of the appliction, it states that he was wounded at Chancellorsville in 1863. He was captured towards the end of the war and held in a prison from which he was released 3 months later in May 1865. He states that he needs a pension because he is unable to work due to "old age and general let down".

He had been slightly wounded at Chancellorsville. As he stood near a fence he was struck by a shot that had been fired at him. The bullet went through his canteen and grazed his leg. He was sent to the camp hospital and obviously learned while he was there as he was appointed Steward in January 1st of 1864 - the previous steward had been transferred out in December of 1863.
