Mrs. Armentrout, the subject of the sketch, was born in Hillsboro and will be remembered by many of the pioneer residents of the city and the county.
At seven thirty o'clock, Tuesday morning of this week, Mrs. Eliza Ann Armentrout answered the call of the "Great Beyond."
Her death was not unexpected as she has been very poorly for the past year and for the last four months has been a victim of cancer and bright's disease. Grandma as she was famillarly known by both old and young of Creede and Del Norte was ready for the summon and it came as a great relief.
At the time of ther death, Grandma was eight-four years, one month and seventeen days old. She was born in Montgomery County, Illinois. In her early teens Grandma married and to this union two children were born, who survive her: Mr. T. Rose of this city and Mrs. Thomas Good of DeQueen, Arkansas, eight grand children and 11 great grand children. After the death of Mr. Rose and at the close of the Civil war, Grandma again married, this time to Mr. Armentrout, who has been dead a number of years.
In May 1872, Grandpa and Grandma Armentrout came to Colorado. In 1873, on August 12th, they arrived at Del Norte and settled there. In 1890, when Creede was commencing to boor, she came with the crowd and has resided here since that time.
All who knew her loved her, and only a very small number who had not at sometime received some kindness from Grandma. She has experienced joy and sorrow and yet she was always happy. Always saying the best things come to us. She saw the rough side of pioneer life and the boom days of Creede, yet she was willing if need be to go farther and help what she could. She was a lovely woman and kindness was always her watch word.
Her constant companion was her son, Mr. Rose, and she derived much pleasure in her old age from his kindness. Besides her son and daughter her death is mourned by many grandchildren and numerous friends. Short funeral services were conducted from her residence and interment was made in the Creede cemetery.
