Edward G. Eisenlohr of 324 Eads, an artist who was known as the dean of Dallas painters, died Tuesday in a Dallas hospital after a long illness. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Eisenlohr was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He came to Dallas with his family when he was two years old. The Eisenlohr family settled in Oak Cliff, where they were among the section's original settlers.

He studied art under R. J. Onderdonk and Frank Reaugh in Texas and at the Academy Karlsruhe in Germany. As a young man he entered the banking business and was connected with the American National Bank in Dallas for many years. He retired from banking 40 years ago to devote full time to his career in art.

Mr. Eisenlohr was one of the early directors of the Dallas Art Association from which the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts grew. His works --- most of which dealt with Texas scenes --- were shown locally over the years and at many national exhibits and 1-man shows.

Mr. Eisenlohr was a member of the Salmagundi Club, Texas Fine Arts Association, American Artists Professional League, American Federation of Arts, Dallas Print Society, and the Kliepper Club.

He received national recognition for his works and was awarded many prizes during his career. He was listed in "Who's Who in American Art" and "Art and Artists of Texas."

Mr. Eisenlohr is survived by a sister, Mrs. Carl Helmle of Dallas.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a. m. Thursday in the Lamar & Smith Funeral chapel, 800 W. Jefferson. Burial will be in Oak Cliff Cemetery.
