Russell grew up in the Guide Rock community, receiving his formal education attending rural school district #10, the Guide Rock High School and then graduated from the Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Omaha for several years.
In November of 1942, Russell joined the United States Air Corps to serve his country during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Following his discharge from service at war's end, he moved to Russell, Kansas where he was employed as a bookkeeper for the Oldsmobile Dealership. Russell was united in marriage with Hilda Keller on April 25, 1946 at Ellis, Kansas. This union was blessed with a daughter, Wilda, and four sons Dwight, Byron, Gordon and Vernon. In March of 1949 they returned to the Guide Rock community where he farmed.
Russell greatly treasured life on the farm and in his leisure time he enjoyed following sports. His greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for his family. He especially looked forward to the visits from his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church; the Guide Rock American Legion Post #278 and V.F.W. Post #10755.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Randal and Lena Yung, a son Dwight Adair Yung and his step-mother, Kathryn Yung.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of forty-five years, Hilda of Guide Rock; his daughter Wilda Leisy and husband Darrel of Atkinson, Nebraska; three sons Byron Yung and wife Jacque of Lincoln, Nebraska, Gordon Yung and wife Teressa of Holdrege, Nebraska and Vernon Yung of Hastings, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren, Rachel, Danielle, Allyson, Robyn, Scott & Jenny; 1 great grandchild, Ryan; a sister Mrs. Veda Mae Shaw and husband Dan of Guide Rock. A step-sister June Briggs of Huntsville, Alabama; three step-brothers Junior Liles of Lena, Illinois; Marion Liles of Freeport, Illinois and Forrest Liles of Salina, Kansas; other relatives and his many friends.
