James was born to David Ward (1787-1846) and Nancy S Holman (1804-1879). He migrated to Oregon shortly after the death of his father.

He married his cousin Nancy Holman on 20 June 1852. To this union were born twelve children. Nancy Ellen Ward Hubbard, Mary Susan Ward Ireland, George D, Ward, Julie Ann Ward (died at 2 yrs), Justice A Ward, Rosa May Ward Critchlow, John Henry Ward, Margaret E "Maggie" Ward Soule, James Preston Ward, Lindsey Fleetwood Ward, William Latimer Ward and Amos Ward who died shortly after his birth.

His wife died in 1880 leaving him with 10 children to raise, some of them being very young. The family story tells of James moving from his hometown in Polk county, Oregon to Pacific county, Washington in order to keep his children with him. There were many offers to take some of the youngsters but he would have none of that. On 9 Nov 1884 he married Mary E (Frakes) Beason Gordon (1840-abt 1899).
