Eva Irene Grows was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She as left an orphan at age 5 in Pennsylvania. A family named Chapan in Haven, Kansas wanted to adopt a girl and friends of theirs in Pennsylvania were coming to Kansas, so they brought Eva with them so they could adopt her. Eva lived with Chapans and helped them by herding sheep and cattle. The adoption was never completed as she met Dan McArthur and married him when she was 14 years old.

She and Dan were married on June 13, 1881 and to this union were born 15 children.
