Born September 4, 1922 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Dolphus Pinkney Abernethy and the late Flossie Cashion Abernethy.
He was a US Army Veteran of WWII and earned five Bronze Service Stars, an American Defense Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. Ray was retired from Carolina Freight Carriers of Cherryville after 36 years of employment.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Abernethy Chamberlain; four brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Sigmon Abernethy of the home; two daughters, Sandy A. Ewing and Joe Finger of Denver, Judy A. Griffin and husband Bill of Sherrills Ford; two sons, Ronnie Abernethy and wife Jane of Statesville, Terry Abernethy and wife Cathy of Whitsett, N.C.; brother, Dewey Abernethy of Lincolnton; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held this afternoon, January 7, at 2 p.m.at Center United Methodist Church in Catawba with Rev. Paula Northrup officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Center UMC Church Fellowship Hall.
