Sabetha Herald, We 21 Feb. 1934: Mrs. David Sunderland Her many friends in this community were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. David Sunderland Tuesday evening. Although she had been in ill health for several years, her fatal illness began a week ago last Sunday when she was stricken with pneumonia. Irene Fletchall, daughter of Jacob Fletchall and Margaret Grinstaff Fletchall, was born in Grant City, Mo., the birthplace of of her parents, March 1, 1871. She was married to David Sunderland of that community forty-two years ago. They maintained a home in that locality until twenty-four years ago when they came to this community, where they have since lived. Three daughters were born into the home. They are Mrs. Dan Zettle of Seneca, Mrs. Arthur Bestwick of Hiawatha and Mrs. James Drolette of Sabetha. Mrs. Sunderland was a devoted wife and mother. The hospitality of her home was proverbial. There was always a a welcome for all who came to her door. She was a kind and helpful neighbor and friend. No task was too difficult for her to undertake for her loved ones. Hers was a life of service. Where there was need, she always found a way to be helpful. She was essentially religious and exemplified her faith in her daily life. She was especially devoted to her grandchildren, who delighted to be in her home. Two of her grandsons, Lloyd and Corlis Dirst, have spent much of their life in her home. Lloyd, a senior in high school, now lives in the home. Mrs. Sunderland is survived by her husband, her three children, seven grandchildren, and the following brothers, Ed, Jim, L.C., and Pete Fletchall of Sabetha, Dick Fletchallo of Madison, South Dak., one sister, Mrs. Robert Lance of Savannah, Mo. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 22nd at the church of the Bretheren at 3:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Robert L. Sink. The body bearers will be nephews of the deceased: Ranz, Floyd, Bill, Pete, Lonnie and Lee Fletchall. Interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery.
