Dr. Arthur Calvin Broughton, Jr. passed away on the 25th day of January, 2011. He was born June 24, 1914 to the late Arthur C. and Amelia Weathers Broughton. He graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1931 and received a BS degree from Wake Forest College in 1933. He continued his education receiving his medical degree from Medical College of Virginia and interned at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN from 1937-38. Dr. Broughton had a family practice in Raleigh for 45 years. First opening his practice in the Masonic Building downtown and later in the Medical Arts Building at Mary Elizabeth Hospital where he was part owner. He was Director of Medicine for the NC Department of Corrections at Women's and Central Prison 1954-1981. He was an avid hunter, accomplished sporting dog trainer, and excellent horseback rider. After retiring in 1981 he enjoyed golfing, hunting and other leisure activities at his mountain home at Mt. Glen Golf Club, Newland, NC.
Predeceasing him are his wife of 53 years, Katherine Abernethy Broughton, his son Thomas Cheatham Broughton, a brother Carlyle, two sisters Margaret Broughton and Mildred B. Tate. Surviving him are a step-daughter, Katherine Cain, a daughter-in-law, Carol Broughton, two granddaughters, Elizabeth B. Laughridge (Griffin), Jennifer B. Dupree (Jason), and three great grandchildren, Palmer and Sydney Laughridge, and William Dupree all of Raleigh.
Dr. Broughton was a charter member of St. John's Baptist Church where his service will be held on Friday, January 28 at 2 o'clock. Interment will be immediately following at Montlawn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Baptist Church, 1615 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27608.
