Charles Lawrence Hollstein, also known as "Larry" or "CL" was born to Charles Clark Hollstein and Dorothy Louise (Macomber) Hollstein on Nov. 5, 1942. in Niagara Falls, N.Y. He passed away at the age of 68 on Feb. 24, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Durango, following an eight-month battle with cancer.
Larry graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in Niagara Falls, N.Y., in May of 1960. Following high school, Larry received technical training that enabled him to enter the brand new field of computer programming. He used his computer programming knowledge for many years in a variety of jobs - at Buffalo Savings Bank in Buffalo, N.Y., at the headquarters of the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, and for his own company, Professional Computer Systems where he sold and serviced both computer hardware and software in Las Vegas.
Shortly after moving to Cortez, he started working with the Juvenile Diversion Program through the district attorney's office. When that program was completed, he began working at the San Juan Basin Area Technical School as the financial aid director, where he remained for 16 years until he retired in 2004. He was a member of the Colorado Association of Financial Aid Directors, and served a term as president of that association. He was also president of the school board for the local alternative high school.
Larry was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cortez and of the Montezuma County Historical Society, and he worked part-time at the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center. He also manufactured and sold his "Colorado Boot Grease" products. He thoroughly enjoyed having a booth at the annual Ag Expo where he got to interact with all his friends and loyal customers.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister-in-law, Sandee Aulston. He is survived by his wife, Jan Hollstein, and by his step children, Scott Oliver and his companion, Eizzy Leech, and by Shelly Oliver and her companion, Troy Batavia; his stepgrandchildren, Raylien and Chris Oliver, his sister-in-law, Judi Louie and her husband Kendrick and his brothers-in-law Gayle Aulston and Vernal Aulston and his wife Georgia. He was especially fond of his mother-in-law Louise Aulston, who also survives him.
Additional survivors are his son, Damon Faulkner and his wife Janelle, grandchildren Andi McPherson and Robert Faulkner and by his sisters, Charlene Shelton and Chandra Hara and her husband Mako.
