Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Ray J Alsobrook will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Empire Street. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mancos. The Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75 will be conducting military graveside services.
A visitation has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Ertel Memorial Chapel from 12 noon until 2 p.m.
Ray was born on Nov. 7, 1919 to John Baxton and Ineader Ellen (Johnson) Alsobrook at Talco, TX. He passed on Monday, Sept. 27, 2004 at the Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango at the age of 84.
Ray was a career military man, who at retirement was ranked as Chief Petty Officer, Gunner's Mate. On Dec. 22, 1949 in Falls Church, VA. Ray married Barbara Fern Allen. In 1976 he moved his family to the Cortez area.
A craftsman at heart, Ray enjoyed leatherwork and woodworking. During his spare time Ray liked hunting, fishing, building model ships and traveling. Eating homemade tacos was another passion of Ray's. Rodeoing with his son Michael was another favorite pastime. Ray was a member of the V.F.W. and at one time was a Mason and a Lion.
Surviving Ray are his wife, Fern Alsobrook of Cortez; his three children, Margie Wood of Golden, Colo., Janice Alsobrook of Cortez, and Michael Alsobrook of Canon City, Colo. He leaves two grandchildren, Jennifer Bashore and husband, William of South Korea, and Matthew Wood of Golden, Colo.; as well as two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Erin both of South Korea.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
