Demise of James R. Agnew
James R. Agnew was born Dec. 25th, 1840, in Belfast, Ireland, of Scotch-Irish parentage. His mother died when he was eight years old. His father, William Agnew, with his four sons, John, William, James and Henry, emigrated to the United States and bought a farm in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where he established a home for his sons. Here they remained with their father until grown to manhood.
The deceased, naturally ingenious, worked a short time at the carpenter's trade. Then he began business for himself, as a contractor, building flouring mills being his specialty.
Jan 1st 1864, he enlisted in the construction corps of the Union army, and served until the close of the war.
He was married Sept. 9th, 1874, to Miss Mary Frances Codding, of Le Raysville, Penn. To this union were born four childre: Mrs. Carrie Warner, deceased; Martin Agnew and Mrs. Ruth Larson of Lusk; Mrs. mattie Chaffee of Le Raysville, Penn.
Soon after his marriage, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, Le Raysville, Penn., of which he was an active member as long as he was able to attend.
He lived on his farm near Le Raysville, Penn., until the fall of 1914. Being obliged to give up active duties, he sold his interests there and with his wife came to Lusk, Wyo., in order that he might live near his children; where he remained until the Messenger called him home, May, 27th, 1916, aged 75 years, 5 months, 2 days.
The funeral service was held at the Congregational Church, Lusk, on Monday afternoon, May 29th, and was largely attended by relatives, friends and neighbors. Rev. O.E.A. Blenkarn conducted the services and the choir sang three appropriate hymns after which the remains were conveyed to Lusk cemetery where interment was made. The pall-bearers were J.D. Lorenzen, A.L. Miller, P.E. Barber, W.T. Wolfe, H.H. Roberts and Frank Deuel. There were many beautiful floral tributes to the memory of the departed.
