Delphine Grace Abeln, age 78, of Mitchell, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Firesteel Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 23 at Zion Lutheran Church with burial at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM Friday at the Will Funeral Chapel with prayer service beginning at 5:30 PM.
Delphine was born on April 15, 1933 in rural Mt. Vernon to Bill and Alvina Metzger. She grew up in the Mt. Vernon area and attended the Baker 40 Township School through the eighth grade. On September 12, 1954, she married Bernard Abeln in Mitchell. This union was blessed by three children, Dale, Terry and Debra.
Delphine worked many years as a cook at Newberry's, the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge, and Sunshine/Econo Foods from where she retired in 1999. She enjoyed baking, playing Bingo, and spending time with her family and friends. She belonged to Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her son, Terry Abeln and wife Paula of Mitchell, one granddaughter, Kristin Boerboom, her husband Justin and their daughter Danika of Sioux Falls, two sisters, Norma Assmus of Stickney and Arlene Stange of Mitchell, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bernie, her brothers Vernon, Harold, and Harvey, her son, Dale, and her daughter, Debra.
