_____

Henry studied law and became a practicing Attorney.

Upon the death of the father of the late Leonard Case, founder of the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Mr. Case found it necessary to call to his assistance Mr. Abbey as his general manager and confidential agent. The Case estate was of such a varied character that it demanded negotiations with all kinds of men and corporations and it required a very high order of administrative ability in its confidential agent. The publication of the Western Reserve and Northern Ohio Historical Society speaks in words of praise for Mr. Abbey's association with the work: Mr. Abbey relieved Mr. Case of all business cares and was most eminently qualified for the duties which he had been called to undertake. He had lived in Cleveland from his infancy and united great strength of mind to a thorough study of the law, long experience in business, knowledge of the world and cultivated taste in literature.

He had been a practicing lawyer in Milwaukee, clerk of Wisconsin House of Representatives, a pioneer for gold in 1849 in California; he had "rocked the cradle" on the sands of the Sacramento and Klamath Rivers, and had brought back to Cleveland the net results — some gold dust and a full stock of experience. He had settled down to sober hard work in his profession, had been much trusted as a master commissioner, referee and administrator of estates, and was a thoroughly equipped and able coadjutor of all the projects and purposes of Mr. Case in relation to the property, and all other matters requiring counsel, labor and management.

Henry Gilbert Abbey married in Trinity Church, Cleveland, September 28, 1859, Amelia Mathilde Johnstone, born in Cleveland, January 22, 1838; died at Setauket, N. Y., September 20, 1912. She was the daughter of Dr. Robert and Mary (Taylor) Johnston. Dr. Johnston was descended from a Scotch family long established in the north of Ireland and came with his mother to Cleveland in 1831.
