Thelma Marie "Peg" Shuler Abbott Hawn (1929-2011)

Thelma Marie "Peg" Shuler Abbott Hawn, 81, Seymour, passed away at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at The Waters of Seymour. She had been in failing health for more than 10 years.

She was a housewife and had worked for Gerwin Shoe Factory and National Veneer Company, from where she retired. She also worked as a waitress for Stop-50, The Hen House and Holiday Inn. She attended First Church of the Nazarene in Seymour and was a member of Eastern Star. She lived most of her life in Jackson County, where she enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Born in Jackson County on July 17, 1929, she was the daughter of Wade Alva Shuler and Bessie Bell Swafford Shuler Blevins, both of whom preceded her in death. On May 30, 1947, she married Samuel H. Abbott Sr., who preceded her in death April 4, 1966. On Sept. 12, 1974, she married Samuel Riley Hawn at the Nazarene Church, and he preceded her in death May 13, 2000.

Survivors include a sister, Edna Louise Shuler Frische; a son, Samuel (Sara) Abbott II, Columbus; two stepsons, Gary (Karen) Hawn, Sellersburg, and Ron (Denise) Hawn, Brownstown; two grandchildren, Marie Abbott Garrison and Samuel Abbott III; seven stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Roscoe Lee Shuler and James Robert Shuler; a stepdaughter, Janet Hawn Asher; and a stepson, Steve Hawn.

The Rev. Steve Greene will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Voss & Sons Funeral Home, Seymour. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

An Order of Eastern Star service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation or to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Family and friends may call at Voss Chapel on Sunday, May 8, from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

An Order of Eastern Star service will be conducted at Voss Chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m.

On September 12, 1974, she married Samuel Riley Hawn at the Nazarene Church. He passed away on May 13, 2000.

Survivors include a sister, Edna Louise Shuler Frische; a son, Samuel (Sara) Abbott II of Columbus; two stepsons, Gary (Karen) Hawn of Sellersburg and Ron (Denise) Hawn of Brownstown; two grandchildren, Marie Abbott Garrison and Samuel Abbott III; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Bessie Shuler; her husbands Sam Abbott and Sam Hawn; two brothers, Roscoe Lee Shuler and James Robert Shuler; a stepdaughter, Janet Hawn Asher; and a stepson, Steve Hawn.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation or to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
