Thomas Congdon was born in Pomfret,CT in the year 1837. While a small boy his parents moved to Lebanon,CT, where in 1862 he married Caroline Elizabeth Peckham. Soon after his marriage he enlisted in the army to save the Union. He enlisted on Aug.18,1862 as a Corporal and on Aug.18,1862,he mustered into Co.C,CT 18th Infantry. He was listed as a POW on June15,1863,at Wincester,VA and paroled on July 8,1863. He was promoted to Sergeant but reduced in ranks to private. He was discharged on May 19,1865.
In 1873 he came west and had headquarters in Trenton, MO. For many years he railroaded, running as conductor on the Rock Island out of Trenton. In the latter part of the 80's he had run on the Central Branch from Atchison to Greenleaf, later he ran from Kansas City to Emporia. His last steady railroading was over the Santa Fe from Horace to Pueblo. He left railroading about ten years ago and settled on a ranch in Logan County, KS., where his family had located some eight years before. Here he remained until about four years ago, when with his wife he located in Blue Rapids.
Besides a circle of friends he leaves to mourn his death, his wife, his daughter, Mrs Charles Hunt, and his two sons R.J. Abell and Clarence Abell.
