He had served in the N.C. House of Representatives and as head of the State Dept. of Conservation & Development.
He was a son of Van Buren Etheridge and Matilda Tillett Etheridge. He was a Mason and a member of Manteo Baptist Church, Junior Order, Masonic Lodge #521 AF & AM and Treasurer of the Lodge for 12 years, Woodmen of America and Red Men.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Webb Etheridge ; one daughter, Mrs. Matilda Inge of Manteo; 2 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He graduated From Trinity College, now Duke University, and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was cashier of the Manteo Bank 26 years, in the general insurance business, Clerk of Superior Court of Dare County, Superintendent of Dare Schools at one time, a past Post Master of Manteo, served on the State Democrat Executive Committee, State Senator in 1907, served as representative in the General Assembly eight different times, was Director of Conservation and Development from 1933 to 1949, member of New York World Fair Commission, Chairman Ex-Officio of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Commission and a director of the National Historical Association of Roanoke Island.
Funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Etheridge Cemetery near his home on Wednesday by the Rev. William S. Brown, pastor of Manteo Baptist Church.
