He was a loving son, husband, father and friend. He is survived by his wife, Jean S. Doty, and by sons, David C. Doty of Ellicott City, Maryland, Theodore R. Doty of Atlanta, Georgia, Peter S. Doty of San Francisco, California and five grandchildren.
He was born on September 8, 1928 in Fredonia, Kansas to Ethel and Charles Doty. Later his family moved to Topeka for better jobs with the beginning of WWII. There Stewart attended school and he had jobs after school. He graduated from Topeka High School. He received his B.A. degree from Washburn University in 1950. Next he received his M.A. degree from the University of Kansas in 1955, and his Ph. D from Ohio State University in 1964.
While working 2 summers in Rocky Mountain National Park at Baldpate Inn, he met his future wife, Jean Schmechel of St. Joseph, Missouri. Theirs was a summer romance in Colorado, where Jean was vacationing with her family. Today they have been married for over 56 years.
He was drafted, sent to Fort Ord for basic training and then to Fort Bliss for work on guided missiles. After teaching at Kent State University in Ohio he joined the history department of the University of Maine in 1964 and taught there until his retirement in 1995, including serving as department chair.
Stewart will be cremated and interment will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2801 Lomas Blvd. NE. Donations may be made in memory of C.
