The Billings Gazette - Jun. 2, 2009

COLUMBUS - Gladys Aber, of Columbus, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009, at the Stillwater Community Hospital. She was a spry 98 years old!

Gladys was born Feb. 13, 1911, to Jacob and Nellie Wagner, and grew up in Reed Point. In high school, she studied music and voice; and played for silent movies in Reed Point. Earning a dollar a week, she saved enough for a ride in an open cockpit airplane.

Gladys met Lawrence Aber at Reed Point High School and, after graduation, they attended Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings. Gladys and Lawrence were married Dec. 26, 1933.

Her first teaching job was in Judith Gap and, later, she returned to teach in Reed Point.

The early years of their marriage, Gladys played in a small dance band, taught music and gave piano and tap lessons. In 1937, the couple moved to Columbus, where she was a 4-H leader, a scout leader, the organist, choir director at St. Mary's and sang for local events. She was active in Rebekahs, the Altar Society, Republican Women and many other civic organizations. For many years, Gladys wrote the Senior Citizen Column for the Columbus News.

She is survived by two daughters, Kay Woltermann of Columbus, Phyllis (Stu) Kendall of West Linn, Ore.; one son, Larry Aber of Bellevue, Wash.; five granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; grandson Todd Woltermann; and sister Frances Cestnik.

A celebration of Gladys' life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to Special K Ranch, Box 479, Columbus, MT 59019; Columbus High School Music Department, 433 N. Third, Columbus; or Columbus Senior Citizens.
