High School Teacher. He was raised in Troy NC and received a bachelor's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1960. He was an educator at Chapel Hill High School for almost 40 years and taught advanced placement physics, chemistry, photography and astronomy before retiring as acting principal. He also worked extensively with the College Board to assist colleagues nationwide to establish their own advanced placement curricula, and received the First Siemens Advanced Placement National Scholar Award in 1998. He devoted many years as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 835 at Amity Methodist Church and coached Little League baseball.
