MUNCIE - Rev. Cordius P. Abbott, 83, died Friday evening in Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Wayne County, Ky., the son of Perry and Kizzie Worley Abbott, grew up in McCreary County, Ky., and came to Muncie about 1941. Rev. Abbott was employed at Warner Gear (now BorgWarner Automotive) for 35 years before his retirement in 1977 and was a preacher for the Southern United Baptist Church.

He was a member of Westside United Baptist Church, United Auto Workers Local 287 and the Warner Gear Sympathy Club.

Surviving are his daughter, Imogene Perry (friend: Robert Hatfield), Muncie; two sons, Harold Abbott (wife: Debera) and Bobby Abbott (wife: Myrtle), both of Muncie; three grandchildren, Rick Abbott and Kellie Brooke Cook, both of Muncie, and Misty Dawn Little, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Raymond Abbott (wife: Bonnie) and Delbert Abbott (wife: Lucille), and a sister, Della Roberts (husband: Hobart), all of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Duva Abbott, who died in 1998, and a sister, Eva Jones.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Louie Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at the mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.
