Josephine was born on July 4, 1906 to Edna and Moses Abousleman.
Josephine began her career as an educatior immediately after graducating from high school. Jospehine received her degree for St. Joseph's on the Rio Grande. In her early years, Josephine was principal of Corrales schools and later taught with the Jemez Valley Schools.
After retiring from the school system, Josephine was elected Mayor of Jemez Springs. Josephine served in this position from 1970 until 1978. Jospehine was instrumental in the progess of the village, particularly in acquiring a commuinity wide sewer system, Fitzgerald Park and the development of the fire department. Jospehine also assisted in the development of the Jemez Valley Clinic.
Josephine was a devoted member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church.
Josephine is survived by her brother, Thomas Abousleman of Jemez Springs, nieces, Dorothy and Marian Sotel of Albuquerque, Connie Ryan and her husband, Jack of Albuquerque, Ann Marie Rolfes of California and Helen Flowers of Arizona, nephew, Fred Abousleman of Washington, D.C., sister-in-law, Margaret Abousleman of Santa Fé, three grand-nephews and two grand-nieces.
Her brother, Fred and Marcel Abousleman, sisters, Rose and Barbara Abousleman, sisters, Lillian Sotel and Sara Nassour preceded her in death.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, June 1, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Jemez Springs.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church Building Fund in c/o Father Jim Sampson, S.P., PO Box 10, Jemez Springs, NM 87025.
