Harriet's father, William King Abercrombie, was born in Tennessee and her mother, Martha Trifenia Vaughn, was born in Arkansas. They married in Arkansas and lived there for about ten years having five children before they came west. Harriet was born in Colorado and the remainder of her siblings were born in Albion and then Malta, Idaho.
Harriet married Herbert Barnard McCauley on August 10, 1901 in Albion, Idaho. They became parents to five children: Leroy Barnard, Ralph Thomas, Samuel James, Ella May, and Alexander Edwin - all born in Utah and Juab Counties in Utah.
The family moved to American Falls, Idaho where her husband was a well driller. Harriet died there while her children were all still very young.
