Aiken Man Is Killed By Tractor
AIKEN — An Aiken County Farmer was killed at his home at Montmorenci at 5 p.m. Thursday when he was crushed between the steering wheel of a tractor and the timber of a shed.
The victim of the accident was Jesse E. Friar, 58.
He was fatally injured while backing his tractor into the shed a rear wheel slipped into a depression in the ground and the driver was caught between the shed and steering wheel crushing him to death.
A native of Oconee County, Mr Friar had lived in Aiken County for many years. A well-known farmer of the Montmorenci Community, he was named conservation Farmer of the year for 1956 by the Aiken Soil Conservation District.
He was employed as a conservation aide by the Soil Conservation Service.
Mr. Friar was a member and Deacon of the Montmorenci Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nina Hatcher Friar; his mother, Mrs. W. F. Friar of Aiken; two sons, Jesse S. ("Jack") Friar Jr. and Capt. Robert G. Friar of the U.S. Army at Fort Knox Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. W. B. Bates of Aiken, Mrs. Rufus Lybrand of Johnston and Mrs. Sarah Friar of Aiken and two brothers, Willie Friar of Ward and Charlie Friar of Johnston.
Funeral plans are incomplete.
