Emily Joan Abercrombie, 77, of Cambridge, Neb., formerly of Washington, Kan., died Friday, August 26, 2011 at Cambridge.

A funeral service was held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 30, at First United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Pastor Marilyn Sweet officiated. Becky Pannbacker played congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden."

Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Doug Allen, Max Peltier, Mike Rencin, Nick Lewis, Christopher Allen and Colt Lewis.

Joan was born January 2, 1934 at Oskaloosa, Kansas to George Eli and Sarah Emily (McCaslin) Bowen.

She married Max E. Abercrombie at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas on March 31, 1953. They lived many places with the Air Force, moving back to Washington in 1966, after Max was discharged.

Joan was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, and American Legion Auxillary. She liked embroidery, playing cards and was an avid sports fan. She and her husband played Mr. and Mrs. Santa in Washington, for several years.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Max; daughter, Maxine; and brothers-in-law, Bill Jones, George Abercrombie; sisters-in-law, Vi Abercrombie, Jean Abercrombie; and a nephew, Brent Jones.

Survivors include her son, Max (Suzanne) Abercrombie, Jr., McCook, NE; daughter, Marsha (Todd) Lewis, Tryon, NE; brother, Dr. Richard E. (Joannie) Bowen, Greenfield, IN; sister, Janet Jones, Washington, KS; and five grandchildren, Kerry Kotschwar (Steve), Lincoln, NE, Angela Abercrombie and fiancé Jared Piper, Cozad, NE, Frankie Lewis, Colt Lewis and Rugar Lewis, Tryon, NE.

Memorial may be made to Friendly Corners or the Washington County Museum. Contributions may be sent in care of Ward Funeral Home, 115 W 2nd, Washington, KS 66968.
