Mr. Bogan was born in Warm Springs, VA., on Dec. 31, 1924. He served in the Army in the European Theater during World War 11. I heard him speak only once about an experience during the War- He was riding on a tank and was narrowly missed by the bullet of a German sniper that hit the radio he was carrying instead of him. The Lord was with him that day. I was also amazed that the military accepted him due to the obvious limp he had since a young child as the result of an automobile accident where his right hip was crushed.
After his marriage to Alice Brubeck on November 26, 1947, they moved to Washington D.C. and held several jobs to support his family. In 1954, the family moved to Columbia Park where he and Alice were living at the time of his death. Eventually, he used the G.I. Bill earned from his military service to become an Auto Body Mechanic. He worked for L.P. Steuart Car Dealership, and Martin Chevrolet Dealership in Silver Spring, Md., and L Street Garage in Washington D.C. before his retirement. He and Alice bowled on a Church Fellowship League as young adults for many years and when that ended, Calvin pursued his interest in golf. He eventually volunteered on his nephew's, Fred Ryder, Jr.'s, Golf Club in Bowie, MD.
Calvin was predeceased by his parents, and sisters Ethel Bonner, Icie Rider, Mattie Lois and spouses, and brothers- Frank, John, Merle, Ervin , and Hubert.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Alice B. Bogan, 3 sons- Calvin Jr., Michael (Connie), Patrick (Bonnie), and daughter Janice (Rick). Sisters- Arlene Ryder (Fred) and Loretta Mabe (Richard) and a dear friend , like a brother, Lonnie Altizer, and brother's-in-law- Adam (Laura) and Raymond E. Brubeck, Jr.
Survivors also include grandchildren: Erin, Michelle, Melanie, Melissa, Mallory, Duane, Lisa, soon to be born , Kristen and step-grandchildren Cindy and Timothy Fisher, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Services were held at Lee Funeral home in Clinton, MD. and Burial was at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD., on September 4, 1990.
