WILFRED ABELS

CLAY CENTER-- Wilfred Abels, 92, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at Presbyterian Manor, Clay Center.

Mr. Abels was born Oct. 29, 1918, at Clay Center, the son of William and Lula (Kemp) Abels.

He grew up in Clay County. He attended Washington District 15 school and graduated from CCCHS in 1937. He farmed with his father before joining the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He returned to the farm following the war and married Helen Oberg on Nov. 3, 1948. She preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 2009. He continued to farm until moving to Clay Center in 2008.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he lead a Sunday School class, Blaine Township trustee, Farm Bureau president, Clay County Republican Party chairman and treasurer and Manhattan Antique Care Club. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at the Idana Cemetery, Idana, with the Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Burial will be in the Idana Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church, Clay County Historical Society or Presbyterian Manor of Clay Center in care of Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, 918 7th St., Clay Center, KS 67432.
