Funeral services for John Carmen Morris, a former resident of Audubon township, were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Ohlman M. E. church, Rev. J. C. Rapp, pastor of the church, officiating. Mr. Morris, who was suffocated by smoke from a fire which destroyed his home in Glendale, a suburb of St. Louis, Mo., died at 6:00 o'clock Sunday morning, March 13.

John C. Morris was born in Audubon township east of Nokomis on April 1, 1860, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Morris, pioneer residents of this community. At the time of his sad death he was aged 66 years, 11 months and 12 days.

On November 4, 1883, Mr. Morris married Miss Jennie Whitmore, the marriage taking place in Nokomis. Shortly thereafter Mr. and Mrs. Morris moved to Irving where they lived for three years. The family next moved to Mt. Vernon where they resided for ten years. For the last thirty-five years the deceased has lived in and around St. Louis. His wife preceded him in death on April 3, 1911.

Two children survive the deceased. They are Edna F., wife of Dr. I. G. Hubbard of Ohlman, and John W. Morris of St. Louis. Two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Graves of Melbourn, Kan., and Mrs. Lydia Graden of Oletha, Kan., and one brother, William Morris of Atchison, Kan., also survive. One sister, Mrs. Jennie Abbot of Lyndon, Kansas, died about a year ago.

Although Mrs. Morris left this community a number of years ago, he returned to his boyhood home quite often and was well known in Ohlman and vicinity. The sympathy of this entire community goes out to his family in their bereavement. Interment was made in the Nokomis cemetery where Mr. Morris' parents are buried. Remains were viewed at home of Dr. I.G. Hubbard in Ohlman. He was a rail car trimmer.
