Mrs. Evelyn Walker Cole, age 91, of Rockwood, TN passed away at the Renaissance Terrace in Harriman, TN on Friday, November 04, 2011. She was born February 21, 1920 in Cumberland County, TN to George Sheridan & Kimmer Lou Rodgers Ables. Mrs. Cole was a hard worker her entire life. Having begun working at an early age to help support her family, she continued to work in Herbert's family business, Walker's Store, until his death in 1970. She continued working, well past the age of 80 with her nephews, Gary & Steve Walker. She was a great sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. As a member of Clymersville Baptist Church, she truly exemplified the Christian spirit in her day-to-day life. She truly was a hero in Rockwood. She never met a stranger and was a friend to all who needed something. Regardless of the need, whether money, clothes or food, you could always count on Evelyn to be there. Until her declining health she never stopped being a good neighbor. Her extended family was virtually the entire town of Rockwood and Roane County. Known to the town as "Miss Evelyn" or "Miss Walker", there wasn't a finer lady. She was a very visible leader in her community, but went about it quietly and never asked for anything in return. She was a servant leader with a heart of gold.

Having been brought up through the Great Depression years, Miss Evelyn was a fighter. Over the last few years leading to her final days, this dreaded disease attacked her mind and body, but it could never affect her spirit and her soul. She had a special gift of giving and doing for others. She walked the walk her entire life with her service to others and to God. She will be terribly missed by all of us. Sunday lunch and other times with Evelyn created lifelong memories for many people. She was an incredible person and was a shining example of faith, love and kindness. Her legacy is secure. She fought the good fight and is now with God for a job well done.

The family wishes to extend thanks to those who sent cards and offered support during this difficult time. Special thanks and heartfelt gratitude goes to Rev. Charles Kelley. You have been an angel on earth to this family as the primary caregiver/companion for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Herbert Stanley Walker and James T. Cole; son-in-law, John Walker German; sisters, Tommie Swing and Nell Allen; brothers, Raymond Ables and George Ables, Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Juanita Wade and Madelyn Bentley.

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Evans Mortuary in Rockwood. The funeral service will follow in the Chapel of Evans Mortuary at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Charles Kelley officiating. Graveside and interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Rockwood.
