The remains of the late Col. E. J. Loveless have arrived at Clark's Hill from California. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. A number of friends in this city leave on the morning train to attend the funeral. The funeral of Colonel E. J. Loveless will take place from the family residence at Clark's Hill, January 22, 1875. The services will be conducted by J. L. Smith, D. D, assisted by Rev. J. H. Hull.
The funeral of the late E. J. Loveless took place at Clark's Hill this morning at half-past 10 o'clock.
The funeral sermon by Dr. J. L. Smith was preached from Job XIV 10. "Man dieth and wasteth away. Yes, man giveth up the Ghost and where is he?"
The Doctor first showed death was separation. 1st of soul and body. 2nd Spiritual death is where the spirit of man is out of harmony with God as a spirit. 3rd The continuation of spiritual death constitutes the second or eternal death. But the Doctor dwelt mainly on the last member of the text. "WHERE is he?"
This he said had been the great inquiry of man in all ages. The ancient heathen philosophers asked with the greatest solemnity: "What is there beyond? When I die what will become of me." Job asks: If a man die shall he live again? Atheism answers not Christianity answers yea! And in thundering tones declares that Jesus Christ hath abolished death and brought life and immorality to life by the gospel. At the close the friends of the deceased were tenderly commended to God and to "the word of His Grace."
The Masons then took charge of his remains and in accordance with their beautiful ritual laid them away in their last resting place. The funeral was very largely attended.
