Dr. Howard F. Aarstad, age 88, of Watertown, SD., and Sun City West, AZ., passed
away on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the
Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Lauricella officiating. Interment at Mt.
Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Military Honors were conducted by the Codington
County Post 17 of the American Legion.

Memorials may be designated to the South Dakota Alzheimer's Association, and
Lake Area Technical Institute.

Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Watertown Lions Club, and members of
the South Dakota Dental Association.

Active Pallbearers were Howard's sons and stepsons.

Howard F. Aarstad, the son of Carl and Lena (Anderson) Aarstad was born on May
11, 1918 at Watertown. He attended school in Willow Lake where he graduated from
High School. He then received a B.S. degree at South Dakota State University. He
taught at Lily High School and coached Basketball and Track. Following teaching
and coaching, he worked for Norris Stamping Mfg. in Los Angeles, California.
After working on every machine in the plant, he became inspector.

In 1941 he joined the Civil Service and trained to teach inspection and
maintenance of Aircraft at Chanutefield, IL., and eventually he became
supervisor at Lincoln Air Base in Lincoln, NE. He enrolled at the University of
Nebraska Dental College, graduating in 1947 and remained with the Crown and
Bridge Dept. for a year at the University. Howard practiced at Scottsbluff
Clinic, Scottsbluff, NE for two years and moved to Watertown, SD to practice
except for two years he spent serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean
Conflict, being honorably discharged as a Captain.

On May 24, 1942 he married Lorraine Pearson at Willow Lake, South Dakota. The
couple made their home in Watertown where they raised four sons. Lorraine
Aarstad passed away on July 4, 1995. Howard married Elaine A. Nerenz on December
28, 1996 at Sun City West, Arizona.

He was past stewardship Chairman, Board of Trustees, past President of the
Congregation and past Board Member of Deacons at Grace Lutheran Church, a member
of the American Legion, a long-time member of Elks Lodge #838, and a long-time
sponsor member of Ducks Unlimited. He was past President of the Watertown Lions
Club when the Lions Club swimming pool was conceived and built. Howard also
served for 10 years on the Watertown District School Board and was past
president of the board when he made the motion to start the first Vocational
School in Watertown, SD.

Howards past and present experience was utilized in developing Dental Assisting
and Dental Laboratory Tech programs, Machine and Air Frame Power Mechanics. Dr.
Aarstad was the recipient of the Businessman's Award of the year in 1976 at
South Dakota State Vo-Tech Teachers and Administrations Meeting.

Howard was a member of the International Dental Research Group with a Time and
Motion Engineering Study which resulted in initiating much of the time and
motion concepts in dentistry. This resulted in traveling with the group to
several countries. He was a member of Omega Kappa Upsilon, Pierre Furchard
Academy, was twice a board member of the American Academy of Dental Practice,
and was a South Dakota Counselor of International College of Dentistry.

He was past District President, Chairman of Dental Childrens Week, served on the
Delta Board, Board of Trustees and was past president of the South Dakota Dental
Association. He was also an honored guest of the South Dakota Dental Association
in 1984. His hobbies were farming, hunting, fishing and golfing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lorraine; one sister,
Helen Degler; an infant sister, Virginia; and an infant brother, John.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Aarstad of Watertown; four sons, Dr. Robert
Aarstad and his wife, Kitty of Bossier City, LA, James Aarstad and his wife Barb
of Watertown, Thomas Aarstad of Sioux Falls, and Donald Aarstad and his wife
Robin of Watertown; a brother-in-law, Bill Degler of Sioux Falls; two
stepchildren, David Nerenz and his wife Ann of Ann Arbor, MI, and Tim Nerenz and
his wife Joanne of Merrimac, WI; nine grandchildren; and two great
grandchildren.
